Day 1 - 611.3kms of open road.....

| So at 6:08am on Saturday I left the petrol station at Northcliff corner and hit the road to Durban....the sun was just rising and with a Long Island Iced Tea taste in my mouth I armed myself with a can of Cream Soda (the perfect compliment to a morning after Long Islands), a can of Red Sparberry, a bottle of Energade and a pack-o-20`s Chesterfield...2 bar in the tyres, R 313-50 in the tank and then it was time to go... Man, what a great trip it was, the traffic was almost non-existent...the temparature was perfect, and I was so excited to be on the road at last after weeks of waiting... |

| Initially I was gonna stop off at one or two small guest lodges and B&B`s to chatter with the locals and have a cuppa java and a sarmie or two, but I was enjoying driving on the open road so much that I didn`t want to stop at all....after 342km`s I was forced to take a Long Island Iced Pee and so decided to stop off at a place called the 1/2 Way Roadhouse/Petrol Station/Gift Card Shop/Barber/Takeaway/Biltong Shop just outside of Montrose... There I ordered a toasted cheese/egg sarmie (Mental note to self : Don`t stop there on the way back to Joeys) and parked off for ten or so minutes. I saw a few birds (of the feathered variety) and decided to feed them most of the sarmie, and then I hit the road again....there was little traffic to contend with, so driving was an absolute pleasure. I arrived at my destination at 12:09 and after greeting the folks it was time to crack a beer. I chatted for a while with the folks then decided to have a nap after which I went through to my brother Peters place for supper with the folks. We had a grand time around a plentiful supply of hamburgers, desserts and Smirnoff Spins, but around 8 bells I was feeling very tired so decided to call it a night. It feels great to be home again in Durban, as I was entering the suburbs I started having an incredible flood of memories, things I did when I was younger, people and places, smells, energies, the whole nine yards.... |
